Speaking at Harvard in 1986, acclaimed composer Leonard Bernstein talked about arranging a Rosh Hashanah dinner in his hotel for two political enemies in a divided Austria. Bernstein muses on the degradation of language and true meaning, as well as love and forgiveness.

Now, being a hostess is not exactly my forte, and here I was  trying to conduct a social symphony, if you will, of amazing complexity,  especially when it would get to that tricky scherzo at 10:30; but I was  possessed, and inspired with the notion of exposing this concept, this Begriff [idea], that we call “enemy,” and returning it for good, for  constructive action. I will spare you the details; suffice it to say  that it worked.
